Relaxing in Lake Como

For our second wedding anniversary we decided to return to Italy with a stay in Lake Como. One of my closest friends and her husband recently moved to a small lakeside town in Como and so we combined our annual wedding anniversary trip alongside a stay with friends.

After finding some really reasonable flights with Ryan Air, we flew from Bristol to Bergamo. From Bergamo we got the train to Como San Giovanni where we met our friends for two nights at their apartment.
Our first glimpse of the lake was on the way to Carate Urio and we were truly blown away by its beauty. Living in Plymouth by the sea we are used to being surrounded by water but the lake, and the stillness of it, really gives a level of tranquility which feels completely different to that of the ocean.

Whilst staying with Lucy and Dan we went on lakeside walks to Laglio and went past the famous house of Mr Clooney, we enjoyed coffee and fresh lemonade at local cafes, visited the pretty town of Cernobbio and visited Como town for gelato. We ate lunch on their balcony with stunning lake views in the beautiful spring sunshine that followed after a night of April showers and lightening. We also dined on platters of Parma ham and Italian cheese listening to music late into the evening.

After two nights with friends, we then spent three nights at an apartment in Argegno - a small lakeside village just twenty minutes from Carate Urio - which boasts many little restaurants and waterfront cafes as well as a harbour with boats running to Bellagio. One morning we took the slow boat to Bellagio and admired the beautiful views and lakeside villas.

In the evenings we went down to the square and dined at Piazzetta - a fantastic local restaurant with fine dining at its best - or drank wine and had 'aperitivo' at Cafe Colombo.

To end our celebratory trip, we spent the morning in Como town, ate breakfast at the rooftop bar where we had also enjoyed pompelmo 'grapefruit' Champagne cocktails earlier in the week at the Veuve Clicquot Loft Bar at Coin.

If you are looking for a relaxing spring break to simply unwind, enjoy good food and beautiful views, then Lake Como is for you.
